Course Overview

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) is designed to meet the current and future development needs of individuals delivering training and assessment services in the vocational education and training (VET) sector. This qualification will therefore be suitable for those who are looking to deliver formal training in a structured training environment (such as with a TAFE or Private RTO), provide on-the-job instruction in a workplace environment, (such as delivering one-to-one training to apprentices), conduct workplace assessments and skill audits, as well as coaching and mentoring of staff.

Entry Requirements

Those entering this program must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.

  • Practise more effective ways of supporting workplace learning.

  • Identify how to best support candidates who have language, literacy and numeracy challenges.

We have organised the units into the following three clusters:

Learning Design (DES)

  • TAELLN411 Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills
  • TAEDES401 Design and develop learning programs
  • TAEDES402 Use Training Packages and accredited courses to meet client needs

Assessment (ASS)

  • TAEASS401 Plan assessment activities and processes
  • TAEASS502 Design and develop assessment tools
  • TAEASS402 Assess competence
  • TAEASS403 Participate in assessment validation

 Delivery and Facilitation (DEL)

  • TAEDEL401 Plan, organise and deliver group-based learning
  • TAEDEL402 Plan, organise and facilitate learning in the workplace
  • BSBCMM401 Make a presentation

A combination of knowledge and performance content is delivered in an integrated way during each cluster. The chosen elective for the face-to-face program is BSBCMM401 Make a presentation. However, other electives are available via RPL, Correspondence and Online study.


The assessment in this qualification involves a variety of tasks during and after the formal training component. This includes workbook activities, practical tasks, presentations, reflections and project work.
